Thursday was the biggest day in hip hop in recent memory.
Tha Carter V was freed after almost a decade of torturous waiting and Kodak Black dropped his first post-prison single “If I’m Lyin, I’m Flyin” on top of a long list of emcees releasing new work.
With all of the music that came out, there was easily something for anyone who’s been waiting for new sounds. Here’s the top ten songs that dropped Thursday:
10.) Kevin Gates “Don’t Know“- Luca Brasi 3
Luca Brasi 3 was released Thursday parallel to Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V and Logic’s Young Sinatra IV and Kevin Gates did not disappoint.
The whole project is worth listening to but for fans who gravitate towards straight bars and a disgusting flow, “Don’t Know” is the track to look at.
Get your bass ready.
9.) Logic “ICONIC” Ft. Jaden Smith- Young Sinatra IV (YSIV)
Jaden Smith fans, this one is for you.
Logic used obvious inspiration from the 20 year old’s 2017 mega-hit, “Icon” and Smith talked some shit on the track right before the smoothest beat switch on the album took place.
How familiar does this sound?
“Tell me what you know about real life
Tell me what you know about dark nights.
Bitch, I’m Bruce Wayne in the game
You just perpetuating from the side line.”
8.) Kevin Gates “Discussion“- Luca Brasi 3
The intro for Luca Brasi 3, “Discussion” is something for the real.
Fresh out of a long jail stint, Kevin Gates has a lot to say throughout the album and it all starts here.
“…You know I can’t win with these crackers…”
Gates kept it a million, water is wet, grass is green. You know the rest.
7.) Kodak Black “If I’m Lyin, I’m Flyin” (single)
“Free Kodak” turned to “Kodak Free” and with that comes more of the Floridian style rap that Kodak helped the world fall in love with.
“If I’m Lyin, I’m Flyin” is easily one of the smoothest songs that dropped on Thursday and should be something everyone has in rotation to assist in making this the grooviest weekend in years.
6.) Lil Wayne “Uproar“- Tha Carter V
There’s something about Lil Wayne and Swizz Beats being on the same song that immediately takes me back to creating chaos in GTA IV.
Putting the Xbox 360 classics aside, this song screams nostalgia and is a good shift from the distorted sounds that flood most of hip hop today.
Expect more Wayne on the list.
5.) Lil Wayne “Don’t Cry” ft. XXXTENTACION- Tha Carter V
More Wayne.
“Don’t Cry” features vocals from XXXTENTACION recorded before his death in June and God damn…X was truly a once in a generation talent.
Weezy also puts in work on this track adding nocturnal lyrics to the emotionally heavy instrumental. His delivery is reminiscent of Tha Carter IV’s “President Carter” as its another occasion where there’s no time for games.
Just bars.
4.) MadeinTYO “Outstanding” (single)
It’s been too long since MadeinTYO dropped a collection of music but its looking like the wait for an extended project will be worth it.
Tokyo is reaching back in his bag with “Outstanding”. It feels like something we’d hear off of Thank you, Mr. Tokyo or You Are Forgiven so it goes great with drugs and alcohol.
Not many artists have proven to be as consistent as MadeinTYO so go ahead and throw “Outstanding” in rotation this weekend and let the 808’s do what they do.
3.) Logic “Wu Tang Forever“- YSIV
This one is for the old heads.
Logic is no stranger to having long tracks on his albums. “Wu Tang Forever” is an eight minute blast from the past but its really fine because it actually has Wu-Tang Clan in the song. It doesn’t take much of a hip hop genius to recognize that as a big deal.
The track officially features Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, RZA, Method Man, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna, Jackpot Scotty Wotty, U-God, Masta Killah and GZA…so strap in.
2.) Lil Wayne “Let It Fly” ft. Travis Scott- Tha Carter V
Travis Scott wasn’t even 20 years old when Tha Carter IV dropped in 2011. Flash forward to 2018 and he’s arguably sporting the hottest name in music.
“Let It Fly” will be impossible to not hear for months to come at any kickback for one reason and one reason only: it’s fucking flame.
The chorus has that same dope swing to it that Travis unloads into any chorus he does. Pair that with Wayne’s verse and his own? Sheeeesh.
Seriously, Lil Wayne was a man possessed on this track and I don’t need to tell you to listen to the song because you already have.
1.) Lil Wayne “Mona Lisa” ft. Kendrick Lamar- Tha Carter V
This is what art sounds like. This is where poetry and production collide like the Big Bang and create a new universe of Dope.
Wayne starts the track with:
“I got a story to tell you.
You know that I cherish thee.
Hope it ain’t got too many feelings involved”
Everything after is straight facts.
Lil Wayne reached into his bag and pulled out a nuke with his verse.
The hardest part of Wayne’s turn on “Mona Lisa” is when he’s telling the story of a girl named Liz caught in the act of cheating.
“She a good actress, and you a dead actor.
You’ll be dead after we get what we after.
If Liz call you daddy,
She ’bout to be a bastard, oh!”
Bruh…
Now for King Kenny, Kendrick Lamar, the greatest rapper of all time (0 cap involved). Whatever you call him just make sure Lil Wayne isn’t the ringtone when he calls back.
Its not news or shocking that Kendrick went off on “Mona Lisa”. Disappointment is not an emotion that any Kendrick verse has brought out, so much to the point that it seems he is physically incapable of doing so.
Enough praise just read this shit:
“Bitch, I’m emotional ’cause I been stressed.
I’m not supposed to go through this, I guess.
So in conclusion, since you like rappers,
That’s killing that pussy.
I’m killing myself!”
That’s tough.
